Jennie Carter was the first African American to graduate from the South Western State Normal School, now known as California University of Pennsylvania.

Carter's place in local history was preserved with the 1986 dedication of the Jennie Carter House, home to the university's Black Student Union.

California University of PA commissioned Jason Burik to build a replica model of the Carter House which was given as gift to Jennie Carter's Great-Grandson.
